ISHRS Press Release

NEW SURVEY FINDS MAJORITY OF MEN WITH MALE PATTERN HAIR LOSS WOULD GIVE UP PRIZED PERSONAL POSSESSIONS FOR MORE HAIR

GENEVA, IL. – June 5, 2008. Think you can detect a modern day hair transplant? Then the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS) invites you to take the “Hair Transplant Challenge,” a new online survey designed to test the public’s ability to correctly identify hair transplant patients from fake patients and knowledge on hair loss and hair restoration procedures. To take part in the survey, go to www.ishrs.org/survey. The survey will be available from June 1, 2008, until January 1, 2009.

“Today’s hair restoration surgery has really evolved because of new techniques and training,” said Bessam K. Farjo, MD, president of the ISHRS. “The procedure is safe, and results are permanent, natural-looking, and virtually undetectable. This survey should prove that detecting a modern day hair transplant is not as easy as it would appear.”

During a typical hair transplant procedure, hair restoration physicians split tiny grafts from the patient’s existing hair and plant them into the scalp in thin and bald areas while the patient remains awake. Hair grows in gradually and is expected to be fully restored in six to 12 months. Dr. Farjo added that oftentimes a combination of medical and surgical therapies is the best option to treat thinning hair and to limit future hair loss.

To educate the public on the causes and available solutions for hair loss, the ISHRS website, www.ishrs.org, provides patients with the resources to make informed medical decisions and locate a hair restoration physician in their area.

Founded in 1993, the ISHRS is a non-profit medical association dedicated to the advancement of the art and science of hair restoration. With a membership of over 650 physicians worldwide, the ISHRS provides continuing medical education to physicians specializing in hair loss and restoration surgery and serves as a resource for the public on the latest medical and surgical hair restoration treatments for hair loss.
