Extrapolated Number of Hair Restoration Procedures Worldwide

168,155 hair restoration procedures were performed worldwide in 2004

  • In the United States, 87,987 hair restoration procedures were performed
  • In Canada, 8,861 hair restoration procedures were performed
  • In Mexico/Central & South America, 16,541 hair restoration procedures were performed
  • In Europe, 28,042 hair restoration procedures were performed
  • In Asia, 20,673 hair restoration procedures were performed
  • In Australia, 1,875 hair restoration procedures were performed
  • In the Middle East, 4,176 hair restoration procedures were performed

    Based on the estimated number of 168,155 hair restoration procedures performed in 2004, multiplied by the average fee* charged to patients for a procedure, the estimated worldwide market for hair restoration was calculated as follows (expressed here in various currencies):

    • * The "average fee" charged for a procedure reported by survey participants and used in this calculation represents the overall average fee charged to all patients treated. Since the cost of procedures performed on individual patients may vary depending on the number of grafts and several other factors, the "average fee" as it related to this survey did not represent what all patients would expect to pay for a procedure, and should not be construed as a typical fee for a hair restoration procedure.

    By Gender

  • 89% of all surgical hair restoration patients worldwide were male

    •  o Men in their 40s represent the largest group of male patients (30%)
     o Men in their 30s represent the second largest group of male patients (29%)
     o Men in their 50s represent the third largest group of male patients (18%)

  • 11% of all surgical hair restoration patients worldwide were female

    •  o Women in their 40s represent the largest group of female patients (33%)
     o Women in their 30s represent the second largest group of female patients (23.2%)
     o Women in their 50s represent the third largest group of female patients (22.9%)

  • 72% of all non-surgical hair restoration patients worldwide were male
  • 28% of all non-surgical hair restoration patients worldwide were female


    • By Age

  • Roughly one-third (32%) of all surgical hair restoration patients worldwide were in their 40s
  • Approximately one-fourth (26%) of all surgical hair restoration patients worldwide were in their 30s
  • One-fifth (20%) of all surgical hair restoration patients worldwide were in their 50s


    • Busy Season

    In the United States, the busiest months for hair restoration procedures in 2004 were during the winter or in cooler months - 71% were performed in November; 67% were performed in February; and 65% were performed in January

    Trends

    While nearly all (95%) hair restoration procedures target the scalp, hair restoration procedures were performed in other areas of the body such as:

  • Approximately 3% were performed on eyebrows
  • Approximately 1% were performed on facial areas (such as the moustache/beard)
  • 0.35% were performed on eyelashes
  • 0.34% were performed on the pubic area
  • 0.06% were performed on the chest


    • Pro Bono Work

  • Nearly three-quarters (74%) of ISHRS members performed at least one procedure free of charge to the patient (or at a significantly reduced rate) because of the patient's financial hardship or some other reason

  • Among ISHRS members who performed 300 or more hair restoration surgeries in 2004, 88% performed some pro bono work
